A Mission Beyond the Greens: PSOPRS Second Fundraising Golf Tournament
By Dr. Jo Anne Hernandez-Tan
The Philippine Society of Ophthalmic Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery (PSOPRS) successfully held its second fundraising golf tournament last January 22, 2026, at the Valley Golf Country Club, Antipolo City.
As the morning mist settled, Dr. Mark Imperial, PSOPRS president, opened the round with the ceremonial long-distance tee shot. He emphasized the heart of the mission, “Our annual fundraising tournament is used to fund the medical and surgical missions that we do in different parts of the country. We serve our less fortunate patients who need our services.”

Blessed with sunny weather and clear blue skies, this year, 136 participants rallied through the scenic fairways. With the overwhelming number of players and generous support from all the sponsors, the tournament has been a resounding success.
This project was initially spearheaded by immediate PSOPRS Past-President, Dr. Yvette Santiago-Gatmaitan, back in October 2024, with Dr. Mariel Angelou Parulan, PSOPRS Treasurer. “It was actually the perfect plan to raise funds for our surgical missions, and at the same time encourage camaraderie amongst the PSOPRS community and their golfing friends,” shared Dr. Parulan, as we reflected on the tournament’s beginnings. As the event was not limited to ophthalmologists alone, it became a more inclusive event, where friends and families can take part. The inaugural tournament then drew in 110 players, with sponsorship from different industries and individuals.
The impact would go on well beyond the greens. In the months after, PSOPRS members held another surgical mission at Western Visayas Medical Center, Iloilo. Patients received medical and surgical treatment for a range of oculoplastic conditions, reinforcing PSOPRS commitment to community service. The surgical mission has been one of PSOPRS major activities for over a decade and members have travelled to underserved areas of Luzon, Visayas, and Mindanao. The success of the fundraising tournaments is set to continue driving the society’s missions in years to come.
The awards ceremony celebrated the winners, and each participant received a prize and token of gratitude. Dr. Imperial, Dr. Santos, and Dr. Parulan hosted the gathering and expressed the appreciation of the society to everyone who contributed to the mission. The winners of this year’s PSOPRS Fundraising Tournament are:
Lowest Gross – Mark Ronquillo
Lowest Net – Ding Ferera
Class A Champion – Jess Dacanay
Class B Champion – Hector Silva
Class C Champion – Ron Galang
Ladies Champion – Vina Grecia
“The second tournament is a testament of the success of our first one, as we were able to gather over 130 players, receiving good feedback from the players on how enjoyable the experience was for them” shared Dr. Parulan.
The PSOPRS fundraising golf tournament was truly about playing for a greater purpose – it promoted sportsmanship, encouraged good health, and fostered a meaningful and lasting endeavor that transforms fellowship on the greens into life-changing care for Filipino patients in need.
